  • Dear Umstead Marathon Interest Google Group,
The Carolina Godiva Track Club is pleased to announce that the 5th Annual Umstead Trail Marathon will be held Saturday, March 8, 2008 in the beautiful William B. Umstead State Park in Raleigh, North Carolina. There will only be on-line registration, and this will open Friday, November 16, 2007 at 12:01 am est. We are limited to 200 runners and we suspect the field will fill quickly, so don’t delay! You may register online through Active.com at http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1485723

Help Fund a Water Fountain in the Park:
When you register for the 2008 race, you will have the opportunity to donate to the Umstead Coalition. This donation will go towards the funds required to install a much needed water fountain near the intersection of Old Reedy Creek Trail and Turkey Creek Trail.

There will be NO race day registration.

    Race Information:
    - Saturday, March 8, 2008, 9:00 am.
    - $52 entry (before Jan 1, $62 after that).
    - Course: Hilly; Some rocky, rooty single-track; Hilly; Mostly wide sand and dirt bridle trails; Hilly.
    - NO headphones, baby joggers, or pets.
    - No refunds or transfers.
    - No wait list.
    - No day-of-race registration.
    - Time cut-offs will be based on a maximum 6 hour finishing time.
    - Parking is limited at the race headquarters. Parking lots near headquarters will be assigned to runners and volunteers only. Once parked, your vehicle may not leave until you are ready to leave for the day. (I.e. Your spectator may not drive your car out of your assigned lot and expect to get back to that lot before you finish.)
    - Spectators wanting to come later that morning will park at Camp Crabtree and will have to be able to walk about a mile to get to the headquarters. They will have to walk that same distance to get back to their cars – - – and it is uphill getting back to the cars. Make sure they can walk this far before inviting them to see you finish.
    - Runners getting dropped off will have to be able to walk at least a half mile to get to the headquarters. After the marathon, that half mile walk is up hill.

What you get with your entry:
    - At least 26.2 miles of beautiful trail, plenty of hills, and passing discomfort, followed by an abiding sense of accomplishment.
    - The coolest technical race T-shirt you will ever own.
    - A Goody Bag to beat all goody bags.
    - Distinctive Finisher’s Pint Glass (note to medal collectors: we offer pint glasses in place of medals).
    - Handmade awards.
    - Chances to win fabulous door prizes.
    - Delicious Post Race Meal.

    Awards:
Individual awards will be given to the top fifteen (15) males and top fifteen (15) females.

    2008 Sponsors:
We’d like to thank the sponsors that we have so far: Carolina Godiva Track Club, Great Outdoor Provision Company, and InsideOut Sports.

reality check! Today was 16 weeks before the marathon. Marathon training schedules usually starts sometime between 18 to 14 weeks before the event.
      Who needs a break anyway…

I will be joining you guys for this one! I registered Friday night. See you guys in the training runs soon!

Yeah Belkymd! The more the merrier! Who else, come on, you know you want to say you have “survived it”.

    • 5 Squeeky // Nov 18, 2007 at 10:06 pm

I think “survive” is all we may do. I sure am glad to have compnany on this one. I wonder if I could get Pink to run. Kareng8r, since you said you would train with us, can we talk you into signing up to run it again?

    • 6 terp // Nov 19, 2007 at 2:41 pm

I’m in…for training with you (up to approx. 16 miles) and if I’m in town I’ll be there to cheer everyone on!

I’m up for another marathon next fall…looking for one that has a gradual downhill for 26.2 continuous miles. Let me know if anyone else is looking that far ahead. That time of year works pretty well for me.

    • 7 Squeeky // Nov 19, 2007 at 10:44 pm

Cool, Terp! I think you and KarenG8r should just go ahead and sign up with BelkyMD, Lit’l Bit, Sandbagger and me.

Are you guys doing an Umstead trail run this weekend? I did sycamore trail last weekend and it was pretty fun. It was very rooty, hilly and slippery. I almost fell a dozen times. I would like to try Turkey Creek sometime to check out the challenge. Besides Terp and Karen, I also think HBriggs needs to go ahead and sign up. She was telling me how much she likes trail runs. Looking forward to seeing everyone soon. I am still having trouble with the names but learning. Take care!

I’m just catching up after a week-long visit with my Michigan family. Ack…this is so tempting…but I’m assuming it would take me several hours to finish with the trails out there. Definitely not as flat as the VA beach marathon that I was considering…..I’ll have to stew over this one for a day or 2 (by which time it will likely be filled anyway)…what to do…

    • 11 fgump // Nov 28, 2007 at 12:39 pm

According to the website last night, the race is full. I’m in, thanks (?) to belkyMD’s urging.

    • 12 stabu // Nov 28, 2007 at 4:58 pm

Full race – Yes, I view that as a sign that I should not be trudging around on trails for 26.2 miles at this point in my life. However! I have signed up for VA beach which is a week later, so I will be able to train with the group. Perhaps I’ll volunteer for Umstead, it would be great to support everyone!

If you do volunteer, please bring a few stretchers.

Preliminary 10-day forecast…high of 62 and partly cloudy. Can’t beat that!!
