They’re six doctors you hope to never meet in a hospital, yet you could have a great time rocking out to their music. By profession, they are oncologists and surgeons from Chapel Hill, New York, Texas and Oregon, charged with guiding women (and their families) through cancer diagnoses and treatment and—hopefully—to a cure. With each case, their greatest hope is to deliver the sweetest words a cancer patient can ever hear: “No evidence of disease.” (Thus, the name of their band: N.E.D.)

This band has a mission: To enhance knowledge about gynecologic cancer, to save lives, as well as to bring hope through music to those undergoing treatment, and to the world at large. These doctors strongly believe that music heals. They are in it to heal themselves, their patients and everyone who will listen.

On Saturday, Feb. 27 and Sunday, Feb. 28, the six band members will come together for a patrons’ dinner and two rock concerts – in Chapel Hill and Raleigh. Their powerful music will raise funds for educating women everywhere and promoting early detection of this disease, which will impact nearly 80,000 women in the U.S. this year. In addition, locally, funds will benefit UNC Hospitals and Rex Cancer Center by creating N.E.D. patient resources and support for women with gynecological cancers. Sadly, more than 28,000 won’t hear the words “No Evidence of Disease” from their doctors.

Benefits of Sponsorship

1. This event will include entertainment in support of N.E.D.’s mission. Sponsors will be given preferred seating at the patron dinner and at the concerts in either Chapel Hill’s Cat’s Cradle or Raleigh’s Lincoln Theater.

2. Current patients and survivors will be invited to attend the party. Your support could help sponsor tickets for some of them.

3. Everyone attending the event will be given a copy of the N.E.D. CD.

4. The CD includes an in-depth educational pamphlet: “What Every Woman Should Know,” which is a valuable, pocket-sized guide to gynecologic cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Your sponsorship can support the distribution of the CDs, and the role they will play in educating women everywhere.

5. Your support will create N.E.D. patient resources and support for women with gynecological cancers at UNC Hospitals and Rex Cancer Center.

Join us in giving voice to illnesses that have for too long been quiet killers.

So now we know what Rap Master Sass does in his free time. He likes to think of imaginative ways to get all his friends together to do crazy things that involve crossing the state line (don’t worry, none of the activities are illegal, I think).

The 2010 Blue Ridge Relay starts in Grayson Highlands Virginia and wraps up in Asheville NC.

We need 12 runners. We could probably also take a few people in the “maybe” slot as alternates.

January 11th 2010 8AM – Active.com will have a second sign-up period for the Umstead Trail Marathon, with the number of slots available matching the number of people that dropped out. After those slots fill, there will no longer be any refunds, transfers or waiting lists. The fee for that race at that time is $65 ($55 registration with a $10 donation to the Umstead Park water fountain). Note: We have not kept a waiting list, so you MUST go to Active.com on January 11th and sign up. Also, we will do our best to accomodate T-shirt size requests, but sizes cannot be guaranteed for these late sign-ups.
